Dr. Yehuda Kleiner [Institute for Research in Construction, National Research Council Canada]
Occurrences of failure in large-diameter water mains are few and far between, but when these buried pipes do fail, they fail in a big way. The consequences can be catastrophic, including prolonged service disruptions, flooding, major traffic and business disruptions, and contaminated water supplies. The cost of repair is also enormous.

TT UK Ltd.
TT-UK Ltd were recently approached to assist with a trenchless solution to install 110mm OD gravity lateral connections on a new sewage scheme. Site constraints included 1050mm diameter concrete rings and 600mm square manhole covers. The biscuits and lids were already installed. The proposed installation procedure was to open trench. Even though this was a rural location this caused some disruption and took approximately four days to complete an average 12m crossing. Due to the lateral having a gravity requirement the most crucial constraint was the accuracy of installation over the entire length.

On October 3rd 2008 the town Stara Zagora celebrated 100 years of modern water supply. The first networks, however, were built long before 1908: Stara Zagora with its 120,000 inhabitants is situated in central Bulgaria and is known for its ancient Roman water supply system. During the town’s recovery and rise from the ashes of arson and pillage during the Russian-Turkish liberation war in 1877-1878, ancient relics dating back to the 6th century B.C. were found and preserved for the public. Archaeological findings amongst these were clay pipelines and aqueducts which were built during the Roman times and which already then carried water over great distances for the town’s supply.
