Herrenknecht AG in Schwanau, a market leader in mechanical tunneling systems, founded Herrenknecht GmbH in response to the worldwide increase in drilling activities and the low availability of drilling capacities on the German market. When designing this very innovative drilling rig, Herrenknecht Vertical GmbH's engineers mainly concentrated on drilling requirements for geothermal projects, because an increasing number of such projects are currently in the planning or implementation stage in Germany.

Leakage slightly down - companies warned against complacency
Leakage by water companies in England and Wales fell by around 20 million litres a day (Ml/d) in 2005-06, figures released today by Ofwat reveal. Overall leakage in England and Wales was close to 3,600 Ml/d, compared to nearly 5,000 Ml/d just a decade earlier.

Egeplast acquires innovative Solvay technology
Solvay announces today that it has concluded an agreement for the transfer of its HexelOneTM reinforced plastic pipe technology to Egeplast Werner Strumann GmbH & Co. KG, the German polyethylene pipes manufacturer. The HexelOneTM process allows the production of high resistance, large diameter tubing for water and gas distribution networks with considerably improved environmental performance. The process was developed by Solvay's New Business Development (NBD) team at the Group's Research & Technology campus in Neder-over-Heembeek, Belgium.

Prototype software helps predict failure in large-diameter water mains
Occurrences of failure in large-diameter water mains are few and far between, but when these buried pipes do fail, they fail in a big way. The consequences can be catastrophic, including prolonged service disruptions, flooding, major traffic and business disruptions, and contaminated water supplies. The cost of repair is also enormous.

Ready to cross the Yangtze: world's largest tunnelling machine assembled and ready in 4 months in Shanghai.
At the end of April 2006, right on schedule, Herrenknecht AG handed over the first tunnelling machine with a diameter of 15.43m to the Chinese client "Shanghai Changjiang Tunnel & Bridge Construction Co., Ltd.". Together with the Chinese partner "Shanghai Tunnel Engineering Co., Ltd." (STEC) the Mixshield was assembled at the "STEC" location in Shanghai Wuhaogou (Pudong) in only 4 months.
