The Herrenknecht EPB Shield S-300 is the world’s largest TBM with truly unique features in terms of engineering. To master the world’s largest excavation diameter in challenging ground conditions, Herrenknecht engineers developed a so far unique cutting wheel concept especially for this project. It consists of a 7m-diameter central cutting wheel and an outer cutting wheel, located on the same level, with a maximum excavation diameter of 15.20m.

Huge Reception For Tunnel Boring Machine Gabi 1. The Herrenknecht tunnel boring machine 'Gabi 1' reached its target destination of Amsteg in the middle of June 2009 – six months ahead of schedule. Politicians, tunnel workers and 650 guests cheered on the tunnel boring machines as it arrived. This final breakthrough by the first machine in the Erstfeld-Amsteg section constitutes the achievement of an important milestone at the Gotthard Base Tunnel. Moritz Leuenberger, member of the Swiss Federal Council, congratulated the tunnel constructors on their excellent performance at the last stage target.

The German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the Israeli Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) have launched a research project with 1.5 million euros of funding. The three partners in the project are Dresden Technical University, the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Israel, and the German company inge watertechnologies AG, which specializes in ultrafiltration and membrane technology. The aim is to find ways of reducing fouling and scaling in membranes – especially in the context of treating municipal waste water – in order to improve the membranes' performance and durability and ultimately improve the efficiency of a reverse osmosis (RO) plant.

The Robbins Company

A 3.1 m (10.2 ft) diameter Robbins Hybrid EPBM in Istanbul, Turkey can bore in two very different situations. The hybrid machine can switch between hard rock and EPB modes, making it ideal in mixed ground conditions. The bored tunnel will be used to help clean up a sewer system for over 250,000 people living along Istanbul's Beykoz coastline at the Bosphorus. NTF Construction Company will bore two mixed ground tunnels of 4.1 km (2.5 mi) and 3.0 km (1.9 mi) in length with the hybrid machine.

In the southward drive of the Sedrun section, injection work has been in progress since the end of October 2006. These sealing measures are to prevent further water from being drawn out of the rock. By Christmas, the water ingress was reduced by half to 5 litres per second. By mid-February 2007, the injection campaign should be complete. Driving to the south will then be resumed.
