EFC Board Approves $80 Million in Interest-Free and Low-Interest Financing for Westchester County

African Water Facility supports peace-building in Darfur through improved access to water and sanitation
About 750,000 people in three Darfur states will have improved access to water supply and sanitation through a €3.3 million African Water Facility grant approved by the African Development Bank (AfDB) in January 2012. The grant will finance the preparation of bankable investment plans to leverage the $100 million in financing required to meet the medium and longer term water and sanitation needs of the inhabitants in 15 to 20 towns in Darfur, as well as neighbouring pastoralists and nomadic peoples.

Aquarion Water Company to Acquire United Water Connecticut, Inc.
Aquarion Water Company announced they have entered into a definitive agreement to purchase United Water Connecticut, Inc., which serves over 21,000 residents in the Connecticut towns of Bethel, Brookfield, Newtown, New Milford, and Woodbury. With this and pending acquisitions, the company will now provide water service to more than 610,000 people in 47 cities and towns throughout the state in addition to its service territories in Massachusetts and New Hampshire.

MCC Approves $354.8 Million Compact for Zambia
The U.S. Government’s Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Board of Directors, chaired by Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, held its quarterly meeting in March 2012. During the meeting, the Board approved a $354.8 million compact with Zambia. The compact, which addresses one of Zambia’s most binding constraints to economic growth, invests in the water sector in the rapidly urbanizing capital city of Lusaka.

AfDB grants USD 7m to Gambia for rural water and sanitation access
The African Development Bank (AfDB) has signed two grant agreements with the Gambian government totalling USD 7 million to improve access to clean drinking water and better sanitation for an estimated 40,000 people in rural areas of the country and cut hygiene-related deaths in those areas, particularly among children.

Danish well drillers rely on German drilling technology
The members of the Danish Water Well Drillers’ Association were all in agreement regarding the destination for their technical fact-finding mission this year and headed to STDS-Jantz in Attendorn, Germany. The 25 strong delegation, from companies which specialise in geotechnical investigations, well drilling and searching for explosive ordinance, were impressed by the product range and the state-of-the-art production facility in March this year.

New methods for better purification of wastewater
Before wastewater reaches recipient waters, nutrients must be removed in order to avoid eutrophication and large algal blooms, which may result in serious damage to animal and plant life. Robert Almstrand at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, has shown in his thesis that better removal of nitrogen from wastewater can be achieved by providing the bacteria that purify the water with alternating high and low levels of nutrients.

Treatment for Wastewater in Open-pit Mines

Millennium Development Goal drinking water target met
The world has met the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) target of halving the proportion of people without access to safe drinking water, well in advance of the MDG 2015 deadline, according to a report issued this month by UNICEF and the World Health Organization (WHO). Between 1990 and 2010, over two billion people gained access to improved drinking water sources, such as piped supplies and protected wells.
