Origin of solids - Wastewater

Domestic wastewater originates from private households and similar facilities. These solids consist of 80-90% organic matter, such as food particles, grease, feces, hair, paper, etc. [Godeh2002] [ATV96:2007] [ATVDVWKM 369:2003].

The remaining portion consists of mineral solids that result from the incorrect disposal of household waste such as cat litter.

Industrial sewage comes "in whole or in part from an industrial or commercial enterprise". Since the composition of this waste water is dependent on the nature of the individual operation, it is not possible to generalize the type and amount of solids contained therein.

High concentrations of organics are mainly found in the wastewater from the following industrial sectors: food industry, beverage industry, factory farming, establishments processing animal waste, paper and pulp industry, chemical industry, including pharmaceutical and petrochemical industries [SteinD1987].

The distribution of the waste water can take place through a combined system in conjunction with stormwater, or in a separate waste water system. In the latter application, the waste water is delivered directly to the treatment plant through a closed piping system. The solids within these systems tend not to form any deposits as the channels are operated with a high filling volume and adequate velocity.
