Sustainable Water Resources Management: The Book on Research and Development Project CuveWaters
The goal of the German-Namibian project CuveWaters was to make sustainable use of different water sources in one of the driest regions of the world. Between 2004 and 2015 and under the head of ISOE – Institute for Social-Ecological Research, scientists from various disciplines worked together with institutional partners in Namibia as well as residents of the Cuvelai-Etosha Basin on solutions for improved water availability. The results of this transdisciplinary research process were incorporated into an English-language compendium that has now been published.

Successful Reuse of AVN Machine in France
In the little French town of Plobsheim near Strasbourg, a joint venture consisting of the contractors Valentin and SMCE Réha has modernized the municipal drinking water system. Several pipe jacking drives were carried out using an AVN1200 microtunnelling machine. The longest section runs through groundwater in a noncohesive geology and crosses under a busy highway. Since the beginning of 2018 the Plobsheim well has been connected to the urban grid.

Phosphorus Recycling from Sewage Sludge for Fertilisers of the Future
(Almost) nothing works without phosphorus: all living creatures need this nutrient and must absorb it from their food. Although phosphorus is a valuable raw material and its supply is limited, large amounts of it are landfilled in sewage sludge ash. The Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) is developing thermochemical processes that can recover this nutrient from sewage sludge ash for reuse in fertilisers – very much in the sense of sustainable use.

Fluence Awarded Contract for Innovative Reuse Water System in California
Fluence Corporation Limited announced that it has received a contract to deliver a water treatment reuse system to its customer Rosenblad Design Group. Fluence’s zero liquid discharge (ZLD) solution will utilize ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis equipment to treat brine for reuse. The system will be integrated and utilized as part of a larger turnkey water treatment project Rosenblad is installing in California. California is one of the largest water and wastewater treatment markets for Fluence.

Allrounder TBM modernizes Czech infrastructure
A convertible Herrenknecht multi-mode tunnel boring machine (TBM, Ø 9,890 mm) was used for the project to modernize the Czech railway line between Rokycany and Pilsen. The machine excavated two single-track tunnels, each about 4 km long. Because of the heterogeneous soil conditions, the TBM initially worked in EPB mode, then on the last third in open single-shield mode. Thanks to the resulting high-speed rail link, the West Bohemian countryside will be better connected to the capital Prague and thus to the European railway network.
