Less fouling ? more efficient RO: German and Israeli ministries fund research project
The German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the Israeli Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) have launched a research project with 1.5 million euros of funding. The three partners in the project are Dresden Technical University, the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Israel, and the German company inge watertechnologies AG, which specializes in ultrafiltration and membrane technology. The aim is to find ways of reducing fouling and scaling in membranes – especially in the context of treating municipal waste water – in order to improve the membranes' performance and durability and ultimately improve the efficiency of a reverse osmosis (RO) plant.

Aker Wirth tunnel boring machine according to plan on its way to Switzerland
After having completed the contract for an Aker Wirth tunnel boring machine of 8 m diameter in December 2009, and following an optimal workshop acceptance, the various individual parts of our latest tunnel boring machine left our plant in Erkelenz at the beginning of July. The components are now on their way to Switzerland where a tunnel is to be bored for the extension of a hydroelectric power plant.

Kansas City, Missouri, to Spend USD 2.5 Billion to Eliminate Sewer Overflows
The city of Kansas City, Mo., has agreed to make extensive improvements to its sewer systems, at a cost estimated to exceed $2.5 billion over 25 years, to eliminate unauthorized overflows of untreated raw sewage and to reduce pollution levels in urban storm water, the Justice Department and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced today.

Electronic Trial Holes: The way forward?
Companies working on the installation and rehabilitation of our vital underground utility services are under mounting pressure not to impede the flow of traffic & commerce. Increasing Environmental and Health & Safety considerations place additional constraints on those companies who are still willing to undertake this vital work. Many companies now undertake trial hole programs to achieve a better understanding of the environment in which they are about to start work, but the potential for damage to occur to existing underground services, increases with every excavation and insurance costs continue to rise because damage to third party infrastructure continues to happen. The cost of these look ‘n’ see works in time, money & resources, as well as their disruption to the local economy & impact on the environment is no longer a price many are willing to pay.

Geospatial Holdings enters into contract to map over six miles of underground pipelines for the University of Mississippi
Geospatial Holdings, Inc. announced today that it has entered into a contract with the University of Mississippi to provide utility mapping services to accurately map over six miles of underground pipeline and manage this data on Geospatial's proprietary GeoUnderground web-based GIS Portal. Work on this contract is scheduled to begin immediately. Mark A. Trenchless installation of a new house waste water connection
The waste water connection of a family home indicated some fractured damages, causing it to block regularly and then constantly needing to be flushed free. It was therefore decided to install a new sewer line. Only 2 years ago the road had been renewed and a repair or new installation for the house connection using the open trenching method would have split the supporting layer of tarmac and caused subsequent road subsidences.

Long Live Helleren Hydropower: Helleren Hydropower Station in Norway Received a Durable HOBAS Penstock
Helleren hydropower station is situated along the Helleren River north of the polar circle between Narvik and Harstad in Norway. Its wooden penstock DN 2500 has been in service since 1958 and has reached the end of its lifecycle. Hålogaland Kraft AS, one of the numerous Norwegian electricity companies that base their business on 100% hydropower, opted for a long term durable and maintenance free HOBAS CC-GRP HydropowerLine DN 2500, PN 6 to replace the penstock.

Plans become reality for Wales & West utilities
Following its three-plus two year supplier agreement with gas distribution company, Wales & West Utilities, signed in 2008, MAN has delivered two new MAN TGS 26.440 6x2-4 BL chassis with ground-breaking suction excavation equipment from TT-UK and German design partner RSP. These are the first two vehicles of their kind purchased by WWU and are used for below ground gas-pipe maintenance and replacement work. Surrounding ground, including broken concrete, is sucked up and deposited in a chassis mounted container.

Skanska to construct rail tunnel in New York for USD 52 M, approximately SEK 380 M
Skanska has been awarded a design/build contract for a new rail tunnel in New York, U.S. Skanska's share of the contract amount is USD 52 M, or approximately SEK 380 M, which will be included in second-quarter order bookings. Skanska has a 20-percent share of the total contract amount, which is USD 258 M. The customer is New Jersey Transit.

Robbins EPB Attains City-Wide Record in Chengdu
TBM bests 11 other machines with advance rate: In spring 2010, contractors celebrated a city-wide excavation record on the Chengdu Metro, of 457.5 m (1,500 ft) in one month. The 6.26 m (20.5 ft) diameter Robbins EPB has excavated at rates of up to 24 m (79 ft) per day-faster than any of the 11 other TBMs working on the project. The machine began excavation of Line 2, Lot 18 of the Chengdu Metro in January 2010, as part of a project for the China Railway Construction Corp, Ltd. (CRCC).
