These solids are characterized by a high mineral and low organic content, and consist mainly of dust deposits, road debris, vehicle tire and brake pad residue. Other solids include winter maintenance grit as well as sand, gravel and dust from construction sites or unsealed surfaces [Godeh2002] [ATV96:2007].
The small percentage of organic matter consists mainly of leaves and branches. In addition, disposable materials such as cigarette butts, paper, cans, plastic parts and dog waste, etc., represent approximately 5% of the total solids [Godeh2000].
