Centre for Advancement of Trenchless Technologies (CATT)

CATT was established in 1994 at the University of Waterloo, Canada, to support municipalities in finding the best solutions to address their underground infrastructure challenges. Today, CATT clusters 50+  member organizations comprising university, municipalities, contractors, consultants, manufacturers and governmental agencies, all united in the purpose of advancing pipeline renewal, replacement and maintenance research and education. Since its inception, CATT continues to grow and expand its activities, being nationally and internationally recognized as a leader organization in underground infrastructure.

Dr. Mark Knight is CATT’s Executive Director and an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Waterloo. Over the past 20 years, he has focussed his research and career efforts on water infrastructure asset management and pipeline construction, renovation and condition assessment. Dr. Knight is a Fellow of the IAM and chairs several AWWA committees related to Watermain Rehabilitation and Cured-in-Place-Pipe (CIPP). Additionally, he dedicates his time to developing and teaching high-quality academic and industry courses and working in close collaboration with the industry to develop state-of-the-art pipeline design tools.

Together, we are UNITRACC

CATT and Visaplan have formed a partnership to bring UNITRACC to Canada and the US. The Underground Infrastructure Training and Competence Centre (UNITRACC) is a state-of-the-art e-learning portal, offering a large collection of technical documents and publications, as well as carefully structured pipeline management content designed to train new and experienced professionals with interactive animations and construction site models.

This partnership brings together two international underground infrastructure education leaders and two world class innovative organizations to elevate pipeline management training, making high-quality industry content available 24/7 through cost-effective subscriptions to this innovative e-learning portal. Drs. Knight’s and Stein’s vision is for UNITRACC to be a world leader in the development and offering of e-learning certification courses for the underground construction industry.
