The self-guided flushing shield is being used in sewers with oval profiles from DN 800 (800 mm, 32 in) x 1,200 (1200 mm, 48 in) in the German city of Leipzig. The flushing shield is composed of a base support on rollers (trolley) and foldaway arms with steel plate flaps. The trolley can be folded and brought into the sewer via a standard manhole opening. By unfolding and locking the side panels (without tools), the trolley is set up and ready-to-operate. It is then driven, unattended, through the section to be cleaned by the pressure head that arises from the backed up water behind the shield. In the target shaft, the device is halted by a stopper and manually retrieved. By using different side panels, this reaming trolley can be adjusted to oval sewer profiles of different sizes.
