Fast and Safe through Wuxi
Eight tunnel boring machines from Herrenknecht excavated almost 16 kilometers of tunnel in only 20 months, crossing beneath the emerging metropolis of Wuxi. The machines mastered challenging tunnelling stretches with small overburdens. The last breakthrough, for the time being, was celebrated on March 3, 2013. The first two metro lines in the 3000 year old town on Taihu Lake near Shanghai are expected to start operation in 2014. A total of 5 metro lines are planned.

Veolia Water inaugurates new Warsaw wastewater treatment plant
After four years' construction, upgrade and extension work by Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies, the city of Warsaw has just inaugurated its new wastewater treatment plant. With a population equivalent of 2.1 million, and a daily treatment capacity of up to 515,000 cubic meters of wastewater, it has brought the Polish capital's wastewater treatment into line with European standards.

40 Degrees Uphill: Gripper TBM Completes Second Tunnel for Limmern Hydropower Plant
In March 2013 a tunnel boring machine from Herrenknecht successfully completed excavation of the second headrace tunnel for the new pumped storage power plant at Limmern (Switzerland). Equipped with a new safety concept for securing the machine, the Gripper TBM was able to cope with the 40 degree gradient of the two tunnels without incident.

DC Water Christens Giant Tunnel Boring Machine
The District of Columbia Water and Sewer Authority (DC Water) named its massive tunnel boring machine (TBM), christened it with DC tap water, and prepared to send it underground to tunnel more than four miles along the Potomac at a depth of approximately 100 feet.

STRABAG successfully completes Niagara Tunnel Project
After more than seven years of construction, the Niagara Tunnel Project has now been put into operation. In the presence of representatives from client Ontario Power Generation, local construction consultants Hatch Mott MacDonald/Hatch Acres and Austrian construction group STRABAG, the tunnel’s outlet gate was opened to allow the flow of water through the 10.1 km water supply tunnel near the famous waterfalls on the Niagara River.

Robbins Slurry TBM emerges from below Zhanjiang Bay
After advancing up to 392 m (1,290 ft) per month, Robbins’ speedy Slurry TBM made a photo finish in China’s southernmost city. The 6.26 m (20.5 ft) diameter machine broke through at the end of 2012, and the pipeline is slated to become operational in March 2013. The Zhanjiang Bay Sub-Sea Tunnel runs 56 m (185 ft) below water level, and will provide fresh water to the Guangdong Steel Plant via twin pipelines.
