Herrenknecht Delivers Special Tunnel Boring Machine for the New Bosporus Crossing
A large-diameter road tunnel will cross beneath the strait in Istanbul and expand the infrastructure bottleneck between Europe and Asia. The technical planning of the tunnelling operations poses complex challenges. Therefore, the construction consortium ordered a specially adapted tunnel boring machine from Herrenknecht. The 13.6 meter giant, a Mixshield, was completed in early July 2013 in Schwanau and is now on the way to the jobsite in Turkey.

Tunneling Begins on HNTB-Designed SR 99 Tunnel With Launch of World’s Largest Tunnel Boring Machine
Five-story-tall TBM will complete 1.75-mile journey under Seattle in 14 months. Tunneling recently began on the SR 99 Tunnel, which at 57.5 feet excavated diameter, will be the world’s largest TBM-bored tunnel. HNTB Corporation is lead designer for the Washington State Department of Transportation project as part of Seattle Tunnel Partners, a joint venture of Dragados USA and Tutor Perini Corporation.

Improving Rijeka’s water services
The EBRD is supporting improvements in the water services of Rijeka, Croatia’s third largest city, with a loan of up to €13 million. The funds will be extended to ViK Rijeka, the water and wastewater company majority owned by the City of Rijeka, and used to support investments in the rehabilitation of the water supply network and extension of the wastewater collection network.

UTSA, SwRI researchers to develop low-cost method to treat fracking water
Researchers at The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) and Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) jointly announce they are investing $200,000 in new research to develop a low-cost method to treat flow-back water following hydraulic fracturing. Over the next year, the researchers will optimize an inexpensive charcoal product called biochar for the water treatment solution. It will be tested on water samples from the Eagle Ford Shale.

Miami: Tunnel Breakthrough in the Sunshine State
The tunnel boring machine (TBM) "Harriet" successfully completed the second tube of the "Port of Miami Tunnel" at the beginning of May 2013. The TBM with a diameter of 12.86 meters mastered complex geological and hydrogeological challenges when crossing under the harbor twice. A machine concept was employed that Herrenknecht developed in collaboration with the client specifically for this ambitious project. The road tunnel will significantly alleviate the traffic congestion in the world's largest cruise port and the city center of Miami (Florida).

Miami-Dade Agrees to $1.6 Billion Upgrade of its Sewer System to Eliminate Sewage Overflows
Under a settlement with the U.S. Department of Justice and the U.S Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced, Miami-Dade County in Florida has agreed to invest in major upgrades to its wastewater treatment plants and wastewater collection and transmission systems in order to eliminate sanitary sewer overflows. The state of Florida and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) are co-plaintiffs with the United States in this action.
