Teamwork ensures swift pipe jacking under the Elbe
Breakthrough by a micro-tunnelling machine from Herrenknecht in a pipe-jacking project near Hamburg has closed a decisive gap in the construction of two new gas pipelines. The 1.5 kilometer route runs up to 35 meters under the Elbe through various, partially complex geological zones. This demanding technical challenge was competently mastered by the long-term Herrenknecht contractor A.Hak Drillcon on December 4, 2014 after a total of 112 days of tunnelling and in time for the feast day of Saint Barbara, the patron saint of tunnel builders and miners.

Sandvik DP1500i drill rig shows its power in Russia
Sandvik Construction Russia and authorized distributor Quarry Service recently demonstrated the DP1500i drill rig at the Donskoy Kamen and Yugvzrivprom operated Fedorovskoye sandstone quarry in the Rostov region. Equipped to deal with the sandstone application the DP1500i’s bits lasted 2.5 times longer, with the rig using less than half the fuel, and drilling twice the distance.

Piedras Negras to receive US$218,400 grant for wastewater system rehabilitation
The North American Development Bank (NADB) and the local water utility, Sistema Municipal de Agua y Saneamiento de Piedras Negras (SIMAS) in Piedras Negras, Coahuila, signed a US$218,400 grant agreement for wastewater system improvements that will prevent up to 2.3 million gallons per day (mgd) of untreated wastewater discharges into the Rio Grande.

Conference spotlight on PVC4PIPES and 25 years of recycling
As many as eighteen papers (see list below) dealing with the commercial and technical aspects of PVC pipe systems were delivered at the recent Plastic Pipes XVII Conference and exhibition in Chicago. Subject matter varied from the molecular to the "spectacular" with in-depth analysis of PVC raw material and additives, breakthroughs in pipe design and installation methods, upward market trends for PVC-O pipe systems as well as recent findings in the sustainable nature of PVC pipe materials compared to non-plastic pipe systems. Furthermore, the Chicago conference marked the 25th anniversary of recycling PVC pipes and fittings.

Building Materials: Top Score For PVC Pipe Systems
"For building purposes, those PVC pipe systems that are made with a component of recycled material are more likely to have the lowest environmental impact in terms of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)." This according to Professor Michiel Haas who is an expert on building materials and founder of NIBE, the Dutch technical institute for environmental impact of building materials.
