Interested experts gather for a "virtual exploration trip through underground infrastructures" - UNITRACC receives official award as "Selected Landmark"
On 8 November the on-line training and competence centre UNITRACC was awarded the prize of a "Selected Landmark 2007" by Mr Reinhard Krella, Chairman of the Management Board Private and Business Clients of the Deutsche Bank Eastern Ruhr Area, at the UNITRACC Open Day held in Bochum, Germany. So now UNITRACC officially belongs to the "365 Landmarks in the Land of Ideas" that are awarded by the initiative "Germany - Land of Ideas" and its project partner Deutsche Bank. Bochum's Lord Mayor Dr Ottilie Scholz also took the opportunity to congratulate UNITRACC on the award in person.

Guidelines for the application of pipe bursting
The number of pipelines to be repaired is ever increasing worldwide – e.g. in Germany, important pipeline rehabilitation projects are not carried out due to the devastating financial situation of the municipalities. Although this problem cannot be resolved completely, economical technologies can contribute toward repairing at least the worst damages. In general, it has to be decided whether repair, renovation or pipe renewal (replacement) is required. A pipe replacement is necessary:when repair or renovation is technically or economically inappropriatewhen the hydraulic capacity has to be improved by a greater pipe diameterwhen repair or renovation offers only a short term solution with a pipe replacement being inevitablewhen there is request for a long lasting pipe durability and or a higher product life spanwhen the static loading capacity of the defective pipe would be otherwise negatively affected

World premiere for Herrenknecht Direct Pipe: culvert underneath the Rhine River near Worms (Germany) realized in only 13 days.
Herrenknecht has developed a new method called Direct Pipe, which combines the advantages of the established Microtunnelling method and Horizontal Directional Drilling technology. A string of prefab pipes is pulled in with only one step. SONNTAG Baugesellschaft mbH & Co. KG used the new Direct Pipe method to lay a 464m long steel casing for a water pipeline as well as power and telecommunication cables beneath the Rhine River near Worms (Germany). Breakthrough occurred only 13 days after the beginning of the construction work.

WEFTEC.07 is the largest event in the conference's 80-year history
Record-setting numbers of 19,929 attendees and 1,017 companies using 268,405 net square feet of floor space have designated WEFTEC.07 – the Water Environment Federation’s 80th Annual Technical Exhibition and Conference – as the largest event in the conference’s 80-year history. The previous exhibition records of 965 companies and 245,155 net square feet of floor space were set at WEFTEC.06 in Dallas and the previous attendance record of 18,704 was set at WEFTEC.02 in Chicago, the host city for next year’s conference.

Giant seals help protect St. Petersburg from flooding
St Petersburg is regarded as Russia’s cultural capital. To protect its people and cultural treasures from flooding, a 25-kilometer storm flood barrier is being constructed. An essential part of this structure are 40 meter-wide, seven meter-high seals, from Trelleborg.

Grundoburst 1250 G in Warsaw, Poland
In the old historical part of Warsaw in Poland a ND 400 mm clay pipe required replacement over a length of 30m. Inspection of the mains by the Warsaw water and sewerage company showed regular sand on the bottom of the mains, so that it was apparent that the main was fractured and debris was falling to the bottom of the pipe. This presented a permanent problem of road surface subsidence – an imminent danger to the public. The problem could have been confirmed by an internal pipe inspection but this could not take place because the camera simply could not pass through the sand and other debris lying at the bottom of the pipe.

Real 'close fit' rehabilitation of large sewers by GIPP
As published in the September 2007 issue of Trenchless Technology International magazine Nowadays sewer network owners and operators are faced with a huge number of different trenchless methods, materials and suppliers to seal and rehabilitate their pipes. This applies especially for cross sectional pipe dimensions up to approximately 1000mm (40”) I.D.. Above that size the number of approved systems and qualified installers reduces to a comparably small amount.

Robbins hybrid EPBM a versatile solution for Istanbul sewer
A 3.1 m (10.2 ft) diameter Robbins Hybrid EPBM in Istanbul, Turkey can bore in two very different situations. The hybrid machine can switch between hard rock and EPB modes, making it ideal in mixed ground conditions. The bored tunnel will be used to help clean up a sewer system for over 250,000 people living along Istanbul's Beykoz coastline at the Bosphorus. NTF Construction Company will bore two mixed ground tunnels of 4.1 km (2.5 mi) and 3.0 km (1.9 mi) in length with the hybrid machine.

Helium tracer-gas leak detection - Implemented during the normal operation of the pipeline without interruption of the supply
Leakages occur quite frequently in district heating system, especially in older units. Increasing loss of water and damage to the district heating pipeline network will be a consequence long before the leakage can be noticed on the surface. Locating and repair of such leaks is therefore a difficult task. The repair costs in urban pipeline network systems are determined to a Iarge extent by the necessary excavation work. It is therefore important to accurately determine the Iocation and size of a leak. In co-operation with Fraunhofer Institute, DELU has developed a leak detection method which works without interrupting the supply line.

HSP ? Herrenknecht Separation Plants: separation plants for microtunnelling, pipe jacking and associated applications
In the past, it has been proven time and time again that separation is a vital and sensitive integrative module in the use of tunnel boring machines with hydraulic slurry systems. The separation plant separates the slurry suspension components – solids and liquid – in order to re-provide the slurry circuit with the supporting medium and to make the separated solids disposable. Hydraulic transportation is, however, limited by the concentration of the solids and by grain size. Only an efficient separation can guarantee high performance rates. Insufficient separation obligatorily leads to difficulties regarding the removal of the material from the tunnel face to the separation plant above ground, ensuing downtimes and reduced output.

Robbins TBM a repeat record-breaker
A Robbins 7.2 m (23.6 ft) diameter TBM operating on the remote Kárahnjúkar Hydroelectric Project in Iceland has entered new territory. The machine, operated by contractor Impregilo SpA, beat its own world record for the second time when it bored 115.7 m (380 ft) in 24 hours on August 25, 2007. It then set another record in its size class of 7 to 8 m (23 to 26 ft) by boring 428.8 m (1,400 ft) in one week! The previous record was also held by a Robbins TBM that excavated the TARP Project in Chicago, Illinois, USA.

1500 mm diameter main sewer line renovated under sports ground - Use of the Rib Loc Rotaloc spiral wound liner system
A 1500 mm diameter main sewer line in the town of Tiel in the Netherlands was renovated along a length of 626 m by KMG Benelux B.V. using the Rib Loc Rotaloc spiral wound liner system. The location of the pipe beneath a soccer pitch, the length, dimension and condition of the pipe combined to produce an unusual challenge, which was successfully mastered using the Rotaloc method. Advantages of the SWO liner system, such as high static load-bearing capacity, uniformly high quality of the prefabricated liner material, the avoidance of cost-intensive open cut activities, rapid installation, relatively little expenditure on over-pumping and lack of styrene emissions were all positive factors in the success of this project. In recent years, the town of Tiel in the Netherlands has carried out several rehabilitation measures using the cured in place liner method. In April 2006, it issued another invitation to tender for a sewer renovation. The decision was made in favour of the Rib Loc Rotaloc method. KMG Benelux was able to beat the competition in terms of both price and technology with this special proposal.

Grundopit - accuracy beyond doubt
TT-UK Ltd were recently approached to assist with a trenchless solution to install 110mm OD gravity lateral connections on a new sewage scheme. Site constraints included 1050mm diameter concrete rings and 600mm square manhole covers. The biscuits and lids were already installed. The proposed installation procedure was to open trench. Even though this was a rural location this caused some disruption and took approximately four days to complete an average 12m crossing. Due to the lateral having a gravity requirement the most crucial constraint was the accuracy of installation over the entire length.

57 new trainees and cooperative education students start working with Herrenknecht
In September and October 2007, 57 young women and men start their careers doing an apprenticeship or cooperative education program with Herrenknecht AG.
