Surge manhole flushing systems

Surge manhole flushing systems are self-activating systems that are operated without auxiliary energy to automatically and regularly flush non-accessible sewers (DN 200 (200 mm, 8 in) to DN 400 (400 mm, 16 in)). They are generally installed in the upper sections of the sewer line [FI-Funke].

The devices installed in the surge manhole use the shaft volume for the storage of surface water, which is later used as flushing media originating from the impermeable surfaces, e.g. roof areas, roads, pedestrian paths and cycle paths.

The precipitation water can be fed to the flushing manhole via road inlets or separate lines. The filling of the shaft can also be achieved independently of weather conditions via a potable water or industrial water network. This process requires appropriate technical equipment [Dettm2005a].
