Deposit composition

The amount of organic and mineral matter in sewer deposits is determined by the dry weight of the sample after an ignition process.

The resulting loss on ignition revels the organic content, and the residue on ignition reveals the mineral content [DIN38409:1987] [CAN/CSA-Z24511-10].

The average loss on ignition of sediments in combined sewers according to ATV-DVWK-M 369 [[ATVDVWKM 369:2003]] is between 10% and 30% by dry weight, and can be even higher depending on the origin of the material. For example, research by Bröker [Bröke1983] in 1984 of the combined sewer system of the City of Hamburg revealed an average measure of 22% organic matter in the sediments. The density of the deposits varied in the range from 1060 to 2160 kg/m³. The average value was about 1500 kg/m³. Mineral deposits can also have densities from 1800 to 2600 kg/m³ [SteinR2005].
