Six year Scottish Water investment announced

The publicly owned company is starting a six-year programme, backed by £720 million of borrowing from the Scottish Government.

The investment work will support 5,000 construction jobs and will improve drinking water supplies, protect the environment and support the economy.

Scottish Water investment projects planned include:

More than £280 million in improvements to water mains and water treatments works across Scotland.

Over £100 million for a Glasgow waste water tunnel to improve water quality in the River Clyde and reduce flooding in Mount Florida and Giffnock.

£45 million to deliver solutions to around 400 external sewer flooding problems across Scotland.

Over £60 million to reduce the impact of discharges to the River Clyde from Daldowie and Dalmarnock Wastewater Treatment Works.

Drinking water improvements including at Glenlatterach (Aberdeenshire - £5.6 million), Fair Isle (£4.9 million) and South Uist (£6.8 million).

Ms Sturgeon said: "Water and sewerage services are vital to our everyday lives. It is important that we continue to invest to ensure that these keep on meeting the needs of customers, the environment and economic development."

"I recognise that households and businesses are under financial pressure. That is why I expect Scottish Water to continue to deliver this £3.5 billion investment programme without the need for inflation-busting charge increases."

Ms Sturgeon met Mr Millican, Scottish Water chair Ronnie Mercer, and project managers and workers at an environmental improvement project at Clyde Place, Glasgow today.

She also met two Scottish Water apprentices, Courtney Mitchell, 17, from Crookston, Glasgow and Ross McCorrisken, 20, from Balloch, West Dunbartonshire, who are based at The Bridge in Stepps.
