New Jersey American Water Receives Distinguished Engineering Award

New Jersey American Water will be honored with a Distinguished Engineering Award from the New Jersey Alliance for Action. The award was presented to the company at the Seventh Annual Distinguished Engineering Awards breakfast and ceremony on Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2019 at the Forsgate Country Club in Monroe Township, New Jersey.
The award-winning project is an innovative transmission main rehabilitation project in South Plainfield, N.J. being completed by New Jersey American Water this year.
The project entails the rehabilitation of approximately 3,400 linear feet of a 60-foot prestressed concrete pressure pipe (PCCP) water transmission main with carbon fiber, making this one of the largest projects of its kind for this application in the United States.
It also includes the reconstruction of existing manholes and valve pits and installation of a new 48-inch butterfly valve along with two new 60-inch by 24-inch tees to be used as access points. Engineered with the help of Mott MacDonald Co., the project will be completed by Montana Construction Inc. and Schilke Construction Co. Inc.
“We chose to use carbon fiber because of its unique characteristics,” explained Michael Wolan, Manager of Engineering, New Jersey American Water. “Carbon fiber is a fully structural system that does not significantly reduce the internal pipe diameter, remaining independent of the host pipe while maintaining the pipe’s overall hydraulic capacity. Also, carbon fiber’s ability to accommodate bends will allow it to be installed from only two small access points, minimizing disturbances to the surrounding land.”
Located in South Plainfield, N.J., which is the center of the company’s Central Operations region, this transmission main is a critical piece of infrastructure, serving more than 984,000 residential, commercial and industrial customers.
The Distinguished Engineering Award recognizes innovative, unique and outstanding engineering projects for their impact on the state's economy and environment in the fields of transportation, energy, waste and storm water, technology, construction, and the environment.
