McElroy introduces DataLogger 5 and DataLogger Vault

Jan 17, 2014

New pairing offers latest technology for quality assurance in polyethylene pipe fusion.

McElroy recently launched the next-generation DataLogger® 5 and a new software application known as the DataLogger Vault™ to provide users with the most up-to-date tools in quality assurance. The DataLogger Vault provides unparalleled joint-data analysis and storage and is available to anyone who rents, owns or uses a McElroy DataLogger version 3, 4 or 5.

The DataLogger 5, which records and documents key parameters of the pipe fusion process, is the most advanced DataLogger to date offering features such as GPS stamping, barcode scanning, photographic capabilities, and full support for Wi-Fi and cellular networks.

"We are excited to offer this latest DataLogger with all its new features as well as the Vault software which allows users to more easily review and safely store that data," said Chip McElroy, president and chief executive officer of McElroy. "We believe this gives us a direct role in helping the industry meet the growing demand for accountability in pipeline infrastructure."

The Vault

As a free online application, the Vault allows users to view and analyze their joint data from almost any device, from almost any location. If you have a PC, Mac, smartphone, tablet, etc. that has a browser and access to the Internet, you can access your joint data.

The Vault offers enhanced review and analysis capabilities, and since all DataLogger 3, 4 and 5 records reside together within the Vault, it’s easy to review joints without the need for multiple pieces of software or to individually open joint reports.

Within the Vault, joint data is automatically sorted by job site, device serial number, operator ID, machine ID or machine model. Custom tagging and grouping is also available. Joint data can also be sorted and filtered by pipe material, pipe size and wall thickness. This can eliminate the need to re-key data into a spreadsheet or database application for joint-record analysis.

DataLogger 5

With the Datalogger 5 comes several new features such as GPS stamping, a camera for attaching photos to joint records and a barcode scanner. The built-in GPS will record the latitude and longitude of the fusion location. In situations where pipe is pulled, operators can append the GPS data so the joint record shows both the location of the actual fusion and the final location of the fusion joint.

The 5MP camera can be used to take up to four pictures per joint that are stored within the joint-record report. These pictures can be useful for visual verification, QA, etc. When available, GPS coordinates are stamped on the photo. The DataLogger 5's built-in barcode scanner eliminates the need to manually enter the pipe material information which helps reduce error and improve data collection.

The FusionGuide™ features the faster "go/no-go" visual interpretation of graphs generated by the DataLogger which are used by inspectors to determine if fusion joints were fused with correct pressures and times.

As always, our customers have the benefit of on-screen coaching to lead the operator step-by-step in generating joint reports, the flexibility to use a pyrometer and multilingual support. Several software enhancements are also included on the DataLogger 5 such as the ability to record heater temperature readings from up to eight locations on the heater to help verify that uniform heat was used during the melt cycle.

Upcoming releases of the DataLogger 5 software will support the uploading of joint data directly to the DataLogger Vault wirelessly without the need for a PC. The DataLogger 5 continues to provide the same quality assurances from prior models and is compatible with all of McElroy’s Hydraulic Fusion Machines.

The DataLogger 5 supports ASTM F2620-11, ISO 21307:2011-05, GIS/PL2-3:2006-07, Profuse, WIS 4-32-08:2002-04, DVS 2207-1 PE-HD:2005-09, and DVS 2207-11 PP:2008-08 fusion standards.
