Borealis launches new pipe and advanced packaging innovations at Plastpol 2012

Jun 01, 2012

Borealis, a leading provider of chemical and innovative plastics solutions, will launches cutting-edge advances for the pipe and advanced packaging sectors at Plastpol 2012 in Poland.

The innovation highlights on display in Hall E, Stand E-34 are the latest solutions for the productivity, differentiation and sustainability challenges plastics processors are facing globally.

Pipe Innovation

Borealis offers the infrastructure pipe industry a range of innovative polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) materials through its BorSafe™ and BorECO™ product ranges.

For hot and cold water pipes, Borealis has a long track record with its BorPEX™ product range as a supplier of crosslinked polyethylene (PEX). At Plastpol, Borealis will introduce a new outer layer solution for multi-layer composite pipes (MLCP):
  • BorPEX™ ME2578 is now available as the quality outer layer PEX-b solution for multi-layer composite pipes (MLCP). This innovative PE-based material cross-links automatically at ambient temperatures which avoids the need for a post-treatment stage, thereby offering considerable savings for pipe producers. The stability of the material ensures a smooth production process, resulting in an excellent surface finish.

Advanced Packaging Innovations

For packaging converters, Borealis supports the increasing market demand for more customer convenience and design-appeal with the introduction of two new peelable compounds for transparent lidding film and peel against itself applications:
  • Borpeel™ WD955CF and Steripeel™ WE950CF provide superior optics, high transparency and a broad processing window. The innovations complete Borealis’ high performance portfolio of peelable solutions for lidding film on PP trays and peel against itself for standard peelable film, sterilisable applications, medical applications and anti-fogging films.

“It was a challenge to combine excellent transparency, sterilisability and easy-opening performance in one single product,” comments Thierry Chevrier, Borealis Vice President Business Unit Film & Fibre. “By means of our new Steripeel™ grade, we have successfully achieved this unique combination, in order to address the increasing market demand for convenience packaging.”

Value-Added Solutions

Further packaging developments on show at Plastpol will include BorPure™ moulding solutions for excellent organoleptic performance and processability for transparent consumer food packaging and PE caps. Bormed™ polyolefins which meet the challenging needs of primary pharmaceutical and diagnostic packaging will also be featured.

In line with its commitment to bring value-added solutions to the region’s processors, Borealis will also showcase new technologies and materials offering improved aesthetics, weight savings and efficiency benefits to industries such as automotive, wire and cable, and appliance sectors.

“Plastics processors, manufacturers and brand owners in the emerging Central and Eastern European markets are looking to the latest materials to provide the efficiency, high-quality and environmental benefits they need to be competitive,” comments Gerd Löbbert, Borealis Executive Vice President Polyolefins. “At Plastpol 2012, we will demonstrate the advanced efficiency, performance and differentiation opportunities available with Borealis’ value-added polypropylene and polyethylene innovations.”
