American Water, the nation's largest publicly traded water and wastewater utility company, has been named to the 2013 Dow Jones Sustainability North America Index (DJSI), the second consecutive year the company received this honor.

We are privileged to be recognized by the Dow Jones Sustainability (DJSI) North America Index for the second consecutive year," said Jeff Sterba, president and CEO of American Water. "Benchmarking our corporate responsibility practices against the DJSI's rigorous standards supports our continuous effort to explore and improve the impacts of our business on society and the environment. This is a testament to our commitment to ensure American Water is operated with the utmost integrity, and protects the sustainability of its business and the resources it stewards for generations to come."

In 2012, American Water was the first U.S. water utility to be included in the DJSI annual listing and is again the only water utility that made the list. The company showed the greatest increase in the categories of customer relationship management, human capital development and climate strategy.

From reducing greenhouse gas emissions to enhancing customer service and employee engagement, we are focused on conducting business responsibly and delivering sustainable value to our customers, shareholders and the communities we serve."
