BE-01 - Wastewater collection systems and their significance in water management
This course includes tutorial services and a final examination.
The overall challenge of each generation that takes over responsibility for a drain and sewer system is to construct new wastewater collection systems or to expand already existing ones, and to inspect, repair, renovate and replace, or rather adapt, them to the strengthened groundwater and water protection standards. The primary objective of all measures has to be the creation of a fully operational and long lasting drain and sewer system. This is created to transport the wastewater safely and efficiently between the producers of wastewater and the wastewater treatment plant. Furthermore, rehabilitation and maintenance work should be easy to carry out. Thus, sound expertise is required in planning, construction, operation and maintenance. This module teaches the most elementary basics needed for a comprehensive design of an integral drain and sewage framework.
It includes:
- Water cycle (transport and storage of water) at a global and regional level
- Interactions in the urban water cycle as well as effects on groundwater and waters
- Facts and figures regarding the global water demand and water exploitation
- Historical development of wastewater collection systems
- Significance of wastewater collection systems in the overall context of water management
- Cycle of resources (water collection, water distribution, wastewater discharge, wastewater treatment)
- Terms
- Requirements for wastewater collection systems regarding their functionality and performance capacity
- Types of wastewater collection systems
- Structure and limiting conditions of sewer systems
- Pipes – cross sectional shapes, dimensions, fittings
- Pipe materials
- Pipe connections
- Shafts and structures
- Road gullies, gutters (Catch basins)
- Construction methods
- Type and design of the bedding
- Overview of typical intra-urban line types and underground infrastructures
- Introduction to the integral sewer management
- Performance capacity aspects of a drain and sewer system, assessment of the performance capacity by comparing given data to performance capacity requirements, development of a design and its implementation
- Design principles
- Surface water treatment, use and percolation
- Choice of a drain and sewer system
The module creates a basic level of understanding regarding the importance, structure, and function of an integral design of wastewater collection systems. It forms the basis for all other modules in the sector of “Wastewater collection systems”. After the participants have successfully completed this module, they are able to: • Understand and describe the water cycle in its complexity on a global and regional level. • Understand the significance of wastewater collection systems in the context of water management, and define their importance related to the protection of water resources. • Outline the historical development of wastewater collection systems. • Specify objectives of wastewater collection systems. • Describe functional requirements of wastewater collection systems. • Use the basic terms properly, define the pros and cons of different materials related to the installation of cables and pipes, and distinguish between the principal construction methods and the components of drain and sewer networks. • Describe the principal strategies and approaches regarding design, dimensioning, construction, operation, maintenance and rehabilitation. • Explain the approach of an “Integral sewer management”. • Outline the different versions of wastewater collection systems, and define their pros and cons. • Outline different drainage concepts in the field of wastewater discharge and rainwater treatment ,with consideration of the basic conditions. • Understand the necessity to ensure the hydraulic, environment-related, structural and operational performance capacity of wastewater collection systems, with consideration of future conditions and economic efficiency and outline a strategic approach to ensure these performance capacities.
This course is offered by the Prof. Dr.-Ing. Stein & Partner GmbH (Bochum) and S & P Consult GmbH (Bochum) in cooperation with UNITRACC.com. S & P Consult GmbH is a consulting engineering firm specialising in trenchless pipeline installation, rehabilitation and maintenance, as well as environmental technology. We are a subsidiary of Prof. Dr.-Ing. Stein & Partner GmbH.
Prof. Dr.-Ing. Stein provided essential foundations for a sustained management of drainage systems, as well as for trenchless installations of pipelines and their rehabilitation and maintenance. S & P has its focus on this tradition and its intertwined objectives, as e.g. environmental protection, improved underground supply and disposal infrastructures - and with that an improved quality of life in our cities.
The complexity of this task requires interdisciplinary solutions. Our team of highly qualified professionals at S & P is at your disposal. Our know-how in planning, construction, operation, maintenance, rehabilitation and management of water supply and disposal networks, as well as the mastery of all trenchless installation methods and pipeline rehabilitation are the key to our success.
In addition to consulting services and practice-oriented solutions we initiate and support a multitude of research and development projects. We advise and assist owners and operators in all fields of rehabilitation and maintenance management of their supply and disposal networks.
