EPS begins pipeline construction

The first shovel of earth has been turned for the construction of the Ethylene Pipeline South (EPS). The start of excavation in Gaimersheim near Ingolstadt, Germany, marked the beginning of work on the first of 360 kilometers of pipeline in the EPS. Plans call for the pipeline to reach from Münchsmünster in Bavaria across Baden-Württemberg to Ludwigshafen in Rhineland-Palatinate. Once put into service – planned for September 2008 – the pipeline will connect ethylene producers and processors in southeastern Bavaria with the ethylene center in Northwest Europe.

World premiere for Herrenknecht Direct Pipe: culvert underneath the Rhine River near Worms (Germany) realized in only 13 days.

Herrenknecht has developed a new method called Direct Pipe, which combines the advantages of the established Microtunnelling method and Horizontal Directional Drilling technology. A string of prefab pipes is pulled in with only one step. SONNTAG Baugesellschaft mbH & Co. KG used the new Direct Pipe method to lay a 464m long steel casing for a water pipeline as well as power and telecommunication cables beneath the Rhine River near Worms (Germany). Breakthrough occurred only 13 days after the beginning of the construction work.

The previous exhibition records of 965 companies and 245,155 net square feet of floor space were set at WEFTEC.06 in Dallas and the previous attendance record of 18,704 was set at WEFTEC.02 in Chicago, the host city for next year’s conference.

Grundoburst 1250 G in Warsaw, Poland

In the old historical part of Warsaw in Poland a ND 400 mm clay pipe required replacement over a length of 30m. Inspection of the mains by the Warsaw water and sewerage company showed regular sand on the bottom of the mains, so that it was apparent that the main was fractured and debris was falling to the bottom of the pipe. This presented a permanent problem of road surface subsidence – an imminent danger to the public. The problem could have been confirmed by an internal pipe inspection but this could not take place because the camera simply could not pass through the sand and other debris lying at the bottom of the pipe.

A 3.1 m (10.2 ft) diameter Robbins Hybrid EPBM in Istanbul, Turkey can bore in two very different situations. The hybrid machine can switch between hard rock and EPB modes, making it ideal in mixed ground conditions. The bored tunnel will be used to help clean up a sewer system for over 250,000 people living along Istanbul's Beykoz coastline at the Bosphorus. NTF Construction Company will bore two mixed ground tunnels of 4.1 km (2.5 mi) and 3.0 km (1.9 mi) in length with the hybrid machine.
