Tunnel for New Energy Center in Bern
In June 2012 the Bernese energy supply company Energie Wasser Bern (ewb) began with the gradual commissioning of the new Forsthaus energy center. The production concept of district heating, steam and electricity is unique in Switzerland and implements the federal capital’s sustainable energy strategy. A tunnel boring machine from Herrenknecht (AVND, diameter 3.6 m) excavated two utility tunnels to the nearest district heating hub, all in all more than 500 meters in length.

The Analytical Side to Compliance with Drinking Water Regulations
Two new U.S. Federal regulations went into effect in 2009 that directly impact drinking water utilities that use chemical disinfection. Specifically, the Ground Water Rule and the EPA Method 334.0 are now in place with the purpose of improving the quality of drinking water. This paper summarizes the key elements of the new regulations and describes how they affect utilities’ daily operations, plus it will provide a comparison of available technologies for monitoring and calibration equipment as they relate to the regulations.

TPRF Provides Water Filter Systems to Flood Victims in Fiji
After two floods from torrential rains overwhelmed Fiji earlier this year, The Prem Rawat Foundation (TPRF) contributed FJ$50,000 (US$30,000) to ensure that 1,000 families in Lautoka, Nadi and surrounding towns would receive tap-fitted waterfiltration systems to purify drinking water. This is the 21st grant given by TPRF in 11 nations to help provide basic necessities after flooding.

Siemens to provide IPS composting system in China
One of world's largest wastewater sludge treatment plants to use new mechanically enhanced biodrying process: Guodian Northeast Environmental Protection Industry Group, Ltd. has selected Siemens Industry Automation Division to supply an IPS composting system using the new Mechanically Enhanced Biodrying (MEB) process for the Shenyang Wastewater Treatment Plant Sludge Treatment Project in Shenyang, China. It will be the largest IPS composting facility ever built, and one of the largest sludge treatment processes in the world using non-thermal processing. The IPS composting system is scheduled to be commissioned in the fall of 2012.
