CargoCap as guest of the United Nations
Apr 09, 2015
A phone call from George G. Georgiadis, Secretary of the Inland Transport Committee (ITC) of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), to CargoCap GmbH was the starting signal for a presentation of the CargoCap system of potentially historic significance. A high-ranking jury under the auspices of Prof. Dr. Theodor W. Hänsch, Nobel Laureate in Physics in 2005, proclaimed CargoCap one of the “100 pioneering products which will change our lives”.
CargoCap is the 5th transport alternative apart from road, rail, water and air to transport goods in congested areas through underground pipes based on a quick, reliable, precisely timed, environmentally friendly and economical concept with individually powered intelligent vehicles - so called Caps – independent of overground traffic and weather conditions.
This innovative concept was developed between 1998 and 2002 in the context of an interdisciplinary research alliance at Ruhr-University Bochum (RUB) with funding from the NRW Ministry of Education, Science and Research, and evaluated in the light of technical, economic, ecological and legal considerations. Since then, technical advances followed at the CargoCap GmbH (Bochum), the RUB Chair of Machine Elements and Materials Handling, as well as the S & P Consult GmbH (Bochum) up to the current state of technical operability.
The invitation from UNECE for a presentation referred to the 77th session of the Inland Transport Committee in Geneva from February 23 to 26. The ITC is the highest decision-making body of the UNECE in the transport sector. Over the past 60 years, this body in collaboration with its subsidiary bodies created a pan-European intergovernmental forum where 56 member states meet to develop tools for economic cooperation, conduct negotiations and decide on international legal instruments governing internal traffic.
Many international participants agree that traffic problems in congested urban areas and big and Mega cities cannot be solved alone by optimizing and expanding existing infrastructures. This is why the Commission is searching for new solutions and alternatives and in this context became aware of the CargoCap system. The concept met with much enthusiasm so that the ITC secretariat extended an invitation to come to Geneva and realize a presentation of the CargCap system at the plenary assembly of the 77th session as well as an exhibition at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, in the immediate vicinity of the assembly hall.
The CargoCap GmbH was represented by managing director Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dietrich Stein and Dr.-Ing. Robert Stein.
