San Diego Controls Flood Waters with Penetron
Feb 19, 2016
PENETRON is in the mix: production of the pre-cast 30’x5.5’ concrete box storm drains (culverts) was completed in February by ProCast and will now be installed at Woodside Avenue in San Diego. PENETRON ADMIX was used to make the concrete culverts waterproof and more durable.
ProCast Products is a leading manufacturer of precast concrete elements for the Southern California market. The Woodside Avenue Flood Control project, managed by the San Diego County Public Works, will significantly enhance system capacity. The project replaces about 2,400 feet of under-sized storm drains with larger 30-foot wide by 5.5-foot high box storm drains. The new culverts would have the ability to accommodate a 100-year flood, reduce potential flooding to local businesses and residents, and enhance roadway safety around Woodside Avenue.
“Originally, the project specified a competitive concrete treatment,” says Christopher Chen, Director of The PENETRON Group. “But our partner, GCP Applied Technologies (formerly W.R. Grace), demonstrated to the project managers how PENETRON ADMIX would be the ideal solution for this application.” The concrete culverts were produced over the past six months at the ProCast, Highland, CA, facility, where PENETRON ADMIX was added. The concrete was supplied by Robertsons Ready Mix, a concrete supplier adjacent to the ProCast site.
“PENETRON ADMIX protects the concrete against deterioration from water ingress and chemical attack,” adds Mr. Chen. “And the green tracer in the bleed water provided the pre-cast production team with a reliable quality control tool – proof that PENETRON is in the mix!” Construction of the $16 million project began last year with work to underground electrical and telecommunications utility lines, and water and sewage pipes. The installation of the flood control culverts starts in March 2016; the project will be completed by Spring 2017.
The PENETRON Group is a leading manufacturer of specialty construction products for concrete waterproofing, concrete repairs and floor preparation systems. The Group operates through a global network, offering support to the design and construction community through its regional offices, representatives and distribution channels.
