Pennsylvania American Water Completes Mon Valley Portion of $ 101 Million Pittsburgh System Upgrade

Jun 28, 2012

Pennsylvania American Water officials, State Representative Rick Saccone, State Senator Tim Solobay and Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection officials marked the completion of upgrades at the E. H. Aldrich Station with a tour of the new facilities.

The upgrades at the Aldrich plant are part of the company’s approximately $101 million investment to improve service and safety at its Pittsburgh area water treatment facilities, which includes renovations to the Hays Mine Treatment Plant, Becks Run Pumping Station and Arlington Booster Station.

“The completion of the Aldrich project is a major milestone for Pennsylvania American Water,” said Kathy L Pape, president of Pennsylvania American Water. "These improvements enable this facility to meet new regulatory standards and improve our treatment process. We’re also proud that our investment provided an economic boost to southwestern Pennsylvania."

Constructed in 1960, the E.H. Aldrich Treatment Complex is located in Elrama, with the capacity to deliver 50 million gallons of water per day to communities in southern Allegheny and northern Washington Counties.

“By investing, maintaining and improving upon an already reliable and safe water supply, Pennsylvania American Water is continuing to advance public health, while offering future incentives for area businesses to locate here and to further grow our economy,” said State Representative Rick Saccone. “Continued re-investment in our water infrastructure will always be an integral driving force behind progress, economic development and a higher quality of life.”

In addition to enabling the Aldrich plant to comply with new regulatory standards and improve treatment processes, the approximately $8.8 million upgrade enhances public safety by replacing gas chlorine with liquid chlorine to address concerns associated with chlorine gas storage.
“Nothing is more important to our residents than safe, clean drinking water,” said State Senator Tim Solobay. “Pennsylvania American Water’s re-investment in the Aldrich Treatment Plant will help to protect the health and safety of our Washington County and Mon Valley communities. These improvements will pay dividends for years to come."
