Northumbrian collaborators win WaterAid innovators challenge
Dec 21, 2017
Northumbrian Water Group continues to demonstrate that collaboration is essential to successful innovation. Working with +ADD Strategy, an agile innovation partner that specialises in solving hard problems, the team have won an international WaterAid competition focused on improving hygiene awareness and education delivery for rural communities in Nicaragua.
Steve Rudland, Business Intelligence Developer at NWG explains, “The Water Aid Winnovators challenge is an employee development programme designed to solve real problems and fundraise for this important NGO. The aim of the hygiene challenge is to improve personal hygiene in rural towns, including safe water storage.
“Water Aid already has an effective WASH programme in the region, with local hygiene promotors going door-to-door in communities. Our collaborative team focused on three goals: using mobile technology to help with organisation of projects, better motivating the volunteers and making the process more engaging for local residents.”
Paul Sutherland, Managing Director at +ADD said, “We were tasked with launching the challenge response from NWG, and securing a suitable mobile development partner. Nutshell Apps, a local company stepped up to the mark and were great to work with. The initiative was fun and we enjoyed helping with thinking about the needs of different users, and practical interaction at different stages.”
Fiona Urquhart, Service Excellence Specialist at +ADD said, ‘Personal hygiene is a very sensitive issue, which makes promoting best practice in communities challenging for local volunteers. It was important to the team that the app enabled a shared and comfortable experience with residents through a shared screen approach.
“It was also necessary for the app to help both community project managers practically organise teams, and the hygiene promoters to schedule visits, share progress and reports.”
Carl Jones, Director at Nutshell Apps said, “Nutshell is a no-code platform that makes going mobile much easier for businesses. Paul from +ADD invited us to get involved.
“We put together the workflow with them, then handed over the platform for development the app prototype. Nutshell is incredibly proud to be part of this project knowing how immeasurably vital mobile technology is for solving diverse challenges in the developing world.
“To see a team building their own solution, in what is becoming an incredibly innovative space, is the future of app development. We are delighted with their success.”
Steve Rudland concluded “The partnership with +ADD Strategy was very helpful. They offered a different way of thinking and encouraged myself and Ana Nicholson, our Solutions Architect, to step back and look at the whole customer journey. We also learnt a lot about the process of developing apps from the Nutshell team and we even raised £5,000 for WaterAid!”
The turnaround for the project was rapid, with the process taking just eight weeks. Winners of the Winnovators challenge were announced at a ceremony on 19 October 2017.
