British Water Data Conference Captures Industry Transformation

The potential of sensors and digital technologies to transform the water sector was in the spotlight at a British Water conference took place in Leeds on 3 October 2018.
Data & Analytics: Unlocking Value for the Water Industry will give delegates the opportunity to find out how real-time monitoring and data will drive a more resilient, innovative and customer-driven sector in AMP7 (the next periodic investment cycle for England and Wales 2020-25) and beyond.
Utilities collect, process and report on huge volumes of data from their networks, treatment works, customers and the environment. The development of low-cost powerful sensors for data capture and analysis means more data can be captured than ever before.
With careful analysis, this is information that can be usefully applied in strategic and tactical investment planning to drive multiple efficiencies. It can be turned into useable information to inform operations, asset management and business plans, but this can only be achieved with the engagement of all stakeholders.
Water companies, regulators and the supply chain will share their visions for data and analytics and delegates will have the opportunity to network with their peers throughout the one-day event.
Ofwat associate director for PR19 cost assessment, Alison Fergusson will deliver a keynote speech at the conference. She said, “This is an exciting time for the water sector, with companies able to access data with greater ease than ever before.
“There are emerging innovative opportunities for improving services to customers and the environment through interrogation and intelligent use of that data. I’m looking forward to where the next few years will take us on this exciting journey.”
Peter Jackson, chief data officer, Southern Water said, “Huge potential lies in an organisation's data, and that is certainly the case for Southern Water. The potential to provide insights from data to drive efficiencies and innovation are huge and game-changing.
“The opportunity for water companies to collaborate and share data and best practice will drive innovation and bring benefit to the water sector in the UK for customers, the environment and the long-term resilience of water supplies.”
Polly Hardy, head of asset strategy and policy at Yorkshire Water, will also address delegates. She said, “Yorkshire Water is making a substantial investment in technology to improve management of both waste and clean water networks through a data-led internet of things (IoT) approach. We anticipate multiple benefits including leak and pollution prevention and predictive maintenance of assets.
“Events like British Water’s Data & Analytics conference give us the opportunity to engage first-hand with the innovative developments coming through the supply chain in this fast-changing technology landscape.”
Mar Batista, British Water technical manager said, “This event is British Water’s second Data & Analytics conference and builds on the successes of the new Data & Analytics technical focus group which is working hard to support dialogue and engagement between the supply chain, utilities and regulators in this critical area.
