First mechanically-excavated tunnel beneath the Bosporus
Completed safely and on schedule with Herrenknecht technology: In mid-April 2009, the Herrenknecht S-391 tunnel boring machine (Ø 6.11m) reached its target shaft in Istanbul. The new "Melen 7" tunnel crosses beneath the Bosporus, which is the sea strait between the Asian and the European parts of the Turkish metropolis. When the interior construction is completed, the tunnel will supply the European part of the city with water from the Asian part. At its deepest point, the tunnel route runs 135 meters below the sea strait’s water level. The construction team and the tunnelling machine excavated this challenging section safely. The first mechanically-excavated tunnel beneath the Bosporus was built in 13.5 months only.

Theodora the Borer starts two-mile sewer
Work to bore a two-mile (3.3km) tunnel under West Ham in London started April 27 as part of a £65million scheme to protect more than 600 homes from the misery of sewer flooding. The sewer, 2.8 metres in diameter and running 20 metres below ground from Thames Water's Abbey Mills sewage pumping station to Earlham Grove in Forest Gate, E7, is set for completion in Spring 2010.

Robbins Single Shield will Carve Laos Headrace Tunnel
Powering up neighboring nations will get a bit easier with a new hydroelectric project in Laos. The station, on the Nam Theun River, will include a 5.5 km (3.4 mi) long headrace tunnel constructed using a Robbins Single Shield TBM. The 7.6 m (25.1 ft) diameter machine, for contractor CMC di Ravenna, is being assembled at Robbins’ Solon, Ohio, USA manufacturing facility. The Single Shield will be ready for shipment in July 2009.

Borealis increases black PE80 and PE100 supply efficiency for European pipe manufacturers
Borealis, a leading provider of innovative, value creating plastics solutions, announces the start-up of additional capacity for black high density polyethylene (HDPE) for drinking water and gas pipes at its Schwechat facility in Austria. The additional volume puts Borealis in the unique position of ensuring short delivery times and reliability of supply of the latest, high quality pipe materials for manufacturers in Central, Eastern and Southern Europe. The extra unit will allow Borealis to source black HDPE pipe compounds from three of its manufacturing locations – Schwechat, Stenungsund (Sweden) and Porvoo (Finland).

In February 2008 S & P was entrusted with the execution of a value, priority and network ageing analysis for about 500 km of the drain and sewer network by Remscheider Entsorgungsbetriebe. It is the aim to develop individual strategies of rehabilitation and maintenance by means of the service framework concept STATUS - KANAL and based on the actual network ageing that enable Remscheider Entsorgungsbetriebe for the first time to optimise the necessary investments in network maintenance considering individual and long-term objectives.

Survey on the Condition of Road Gully Systems in Germany (Part 1)
Since the second half of the 19th century, waste water systems are built and run systematically in Germany according to the respective engineering rules to be considered. In the sense of the Water Resources Act, they serve for draining of sewage, that is to say, for collecting, draining off, treating, discharging, seepage, and for the land treatment of waste water. From an economic point of view, drain and sewer systems as "systems for collecting and discharging sewage in the form of waste water and/or surface water" represent the most important part. In compliance with DIN EN 752 [1], they include the area where the sewage leaves a building or a roof drain, or where it enters a road gully, up to the point where the wastewater is discharged into a wastewater treatment plant or receiving water. According to this definition, a drain and sewer system consists of three parts, namely the sewer system, the drain system, and the road drainage.

Water Environment Federation Hosts Second Webcast on Economic Stimulus Funding
Webcast Highlighted Next Steps for Securing Funds for Wastewater Projects: Alexandria, Va. – The Water Environment Federation (WEF) hosted the second of two webcasts on 24th March to help members and the water quality community learn how to secure economic stimulus funding for wastewater projects. Passed last month, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) includes more than $7 billion for drinking water and wastewater infrastructure. The first webcast provided information about project eligibility, application requirements, and the expected timing of the stimulus funding.

Liquid Soil - A Technical Challenge
In the last decades there have been many innovations in the field of plastic pipe systems, especially the bauku GmbH had a strong share with developments like the PROFILEEN - safe or the PROFILEEN - drain clean. However in the field of installation methods and installation materials for sewer pipes there has been no real movement until lately the expression "liquid soil" played an important role in more and more symposiums and expert articles. If someone has a closer look at the definition of this word, it is quite clear that this is not a standardized expression for a certain kind of product and that the products of different suppliers have also a much different product behavior. The bauku GmbH faced this challenge and made a first experience in the static design for this application and the practical use at the job site. As such a pioneer work requires a close connection between the pipe producer and the supplier of the liquid soil, the company rss was chosen for the project.

VINCI wins contract to build a pumping station in Qatar
Through a consortium made up of subsidiaries VINCI Construction Grands Projets (leader), Entrepose Contracting and QDVC (a Qatari subsidiary owned 49% by VINCI Construction Grands Projets and 51% by Qatari Diar), VINCI has signed a contract with the Doha Public Works Authority, PWA Ashghal, to build a pumping station to the north of Doha, capital of Qatar.

Robbins EPB Surpasses Records on New Delhi Metro
In February 2009, one of two Robbins EPBs boring India’s New Delhi Metro conquered a new feat. The machine achieved a weekly advance rate of 168 rings, or 202 m (663 ft)-the highest advance rate amongst any of the 14 TBMs used on the metro project.

New PE-RT resin completes portfolio used in hot water pipe applications
ROTTERDAM, Netherlands - LyondellBasell Industries has launched a new raised-temperature-resistant polyethylene resin (PE-RT) to complete its range of materials used in plumbing and underfloor heating. Produced using LyondellBasell’s Advanced Cascade Process (ACP), the new Hostalen 4731B high density PE resin exhibits excellent long-term creep performance and thermal stability and can therefore be taken into consideration for pipe applications. The PE-RT Type II material, which meets ISO standard 24033, is the latest addition to LyondellBasell’s range of cross-linked polyethylene, random copolymer polypropylene and polybutene-1 materials used in demanding applications such as hot water pressure pipes.
