Methodology for leak detection
New pipelines and in particular existing mains and service lines can start to leak due to bad joints, deterioration, stress in the soil and corrosion. This could lead to more extensive damage and loss of precious water, and therefore revenue. Finding a leak and pin-pointing the location will have an impact on the extent of rectification works, environmental burden and investment.

Water Environment Federation celebrates World Water Monitoring Day on the Anacostia River in Washington, DC
The Water Environment Federation (WEF) will join with Earth Conservation Corps (ECC) to host World Water Monitoring Day™ 2006 on Wednesday, October 18 at the Anacostia River in Washington, DC. Ben Grumbles, Assistant Administrator for U.S. EPA's Office of Water, will lead local dignitaries, water quality professionals, environmental groups and local-area students in hands-on testing of the river's water quality.

Milestone in the Gotthard Base Tunnel - first breakthrough by a tunnel boring machine
The first tunnel boring machine (TBM) in the Gotthard Base Tunnel started out in the east tunnel from Bodio in November 2002. Two months later, the second TBM started driving in the west tunnel. A number of different geological zones had to be overcome along the approximately 15 km route to the multifunction station at Faido. The highly diverse geology impaired driving progress. Modifications to both TBMs brought sharp improvements. In December 2005, with 38 metres, the TBM in the east tunnel attained the highest daily advance rate of any TBM in the Gotthard Base Tunnel to date.

Evaluation of membrane pre-treatment to further wastewater reuse
CDM recently completed an in-depth, two-phase study to assess the potential for membrane technologies to expand the reuse of secondary effluent. Commissioned by the Water Environment Research Foundation, CDM, in collaboration with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, conducted research that will guide utilities and regulatory agencies in expanding wastewater reuse. Since rapid urbanization and severe regional droughts make it clear that fresh water supplies cannot continue to indefinitely meet water demands, wastewater reuse will be needed to ensure water sustainability.

Lovat Inc. designs RME140SE Earth Pressure Balance TBM for cable tunnel in Croydon, United Kingdom
The infrastructure services company Morgan Est plc. of Rugby, England has contracted with Lovat Inc. for the purposes of design and manufacture of a 3.6 metre diameter Lovat RME140SE Earth Pressure Balance TBM. This will be the latest TBM to complement Morgan Est's fleet of Lovat TBMs which range from 2.3 to 4.4 metres diameter.

Leakage slightly down - companies warned against complacency
Leakage by water companies in England and Wales fell by around 20 million litres a day (Ml/d) in 2005-06, figures released today by Ofwat reveal. Overall leakage in England and Wales was close to 3,600 Ml/d, compared to nearly 5,000 Ml/d just a decade earlier.
