Bonded joining in sewer and wastewater engineering using thermoplastics
In order to build a permanently operational sewer and waste-water system with a long service life, as in gas and water supply, it is necessary to not only select the appropriate materials and processes but also use optimum methods of pipe connection, i.e. joining. Such pipe connection methods include welding to create a permanent bond, an approach that has been used successfully in the field of PE and PP thermoplastics for many decades. The chief processes used are heated-tool butt welding and electrofusion. These methods of joining are processes which are recognised and practised worldwide in accordance with standardised procedures for welding, application, quality control and testing. They provide a documented secure and permanent method of connecting components in sewer construction and sewer repair/rehabilitation. That ensures a high level of reliability and a secure investment for the operators of municipal and industrial wastewater systems.

Herrenknecht is building its first assembly plant in India
In spring 2008, Herrenknecht will put into operation an assembly plant for tunnelling systems and service in Chennai (eastern coast of South India). In a first step, the 100% Herrenknecht subsidiary “Herrenknecht India Pvt. Ltd.” will have modern assembly, steel production and storage capacities covering an area of 40,000 square meters. The investment amounts to 6 million EUR. India is a key market for mechanized tunnelling in the future.

Retractable Robbins TBM will burrow under Manhattan
A uniquely designed Main Beam TBM is set to bore in the densely urban environment of New York City, USA. Assembly of the 6.7 m (22.0 ft) diameter Robbins TBM was finished on July 27, 2007 in Robbins' Austintown, Ohio, USA manufacturing facility. The machine will be used for two sections of rail tunnel totaling 12.5 km (7.7 mi) for the Dragados / Judlau JV beginning in October 2007.

Like with all important seaside resorts, the population number of the municipality Olonne alters considerably between winter and the holiday season. This asks for a made-to-measure sanitary solution which was really no longer the case. A massive project for the modernization of the sewage collector and wastewater treatment plant was therefore initiated beginning of 2003. The undertaking represents the largest sewer project launched on the French Atlantic Coast in 2005.

Unique Robbins TBM and Back-Up Will Make Short Work of Hong Kong Tunnels
In August 2007, a specially designed Robbins TBM will set out on two short drives for a landslide prevention project in Hong Kong. Assembly of the 3.5 m (11.5 ft) diameter Main Beam TBM was completed in July 2007 in the Robbins China manufacturing facility. The machine will bore two headings of 244 m (800 ft) and 165 m (541 ft) without a conventional back-up system for the China State/China Railway JV.

How to drill clay
Why is it that while drilling in clay, the cuttings often swell and constrict the borehole rather than forming a good slurried flow? Unlike drilling in inert materials like rock or sand, many types of clay are reactive and once exposed to water and drilling fluid by reaming, their properties can change considerably. If you’ve experienced ground heaving, inadvertent flows (e.g., frac-out), reamer balling up and/or problems creating slurried flow using bentonite, chances are you’re drilling in clay.
