External sleeves

For external sealing of locally limited leaks, e.g. lateral cracks, limited pipe breaks, leaking pipe joints (felt connections) also combined with lateral deviations of limited extent in the horizontal and vertical direction, there are available multi-part sleeves of stainless steel with an inner elastomer coating (Image 5.2.4.2.3-1).

With this type of sleeve, seals to pipes with circular outer cross shapes and nominal sizes up to DN 1200 of all materials used in sewers are possible. They are easy to handle and can be used with deviations of the outer diameter of up to 30 mm.

The least width of a sleeve should be approx. 200 mm or suited to the respective pipe diameter, according to the manufacturer. In specific application cases, the width is determined by the extent of the damage plus an additional overlapping dimension of 150 mm. A sleeve bigger by 50 % is required with plastics pipes.

According to the manufacturer, PE pipes must not be permanently sealed with this process [FI-Städt].

Working sequence:

  • Cleaning the pipe in the region of the leak;
  • Applying a lubricant (soapy alkali) to pipe and inner surface of sleeve;
  • Installing the sleeve;
  • Leaktightness testing.

For some of the applications mentioned above, the commercially available sleeve seals mentioned in (Abschnitt 5.2.1.2) or braced connections (Abschnitt 1.7.1) can be used.
